Kimmidoll

Check Out the new Kimmidolls collection at plusbento!

Sushi (寿司, 鮨, or 鮓) is a Japanese dish consisting of cooked vinegared rice which is commonly topped with other ingredients, such as fish or other seafood, or put into rolls. Sliced raw fish by itself is called sashimi, as distinct from sushi. Sushi that is served rolled inside or around dried and pressed sheets of seaweed (or nori) is makizushi (巻き). Toppings stuffed into a small pouch of fried tofu is inarizushi. A bowl of sushi rice with toppings scattered over it is called chirashi-zushi (ちらし).

Most sushi dishes are wrapped in a thin layer of seaweed. Historically these where obtained by scraping seaweed from the harbour docks, then drying them in natural sunlight before processing. Nowadays seewead is mostly farm-grown.

Sake

Mp3 file

Sake (pronounced /ˈsɑːkiː/ or /ˈsɑːkeɪ/ in English and [sake] in Japanese) is a rice-based alcoholic beverage of Japanese origin.

This beverage is called sake in English, but in Japanese, sake (酒) or o-sake (お酒) refers to alcoholic drinks in general. The Japanese term for this specific beverage is Nihonshu (日本酒), meaning “Japanese sake”.

In Japan sake is served either cold, room temperature or even hot depending on the preference of the user, beverage quality or season. Hot sake is traditionally consumed between Chrysanthemum (ninth day of the ninth month) and Peach Blossom Day (third day of the third month).  It’s one of few alcoholic beverages served hot.

Bento

Bento (弁当, bentō?) is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal
common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat,
and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container.

“Bento” originates from the Southern Song slang term 便當 (pinyin: biàndāng), meaning “convenient” or “convenience.”
When imported to Japan, it was written with the ateji 便道, 辨道, and 辨當. In shinjitai, 辨當 is written as 弁当.

In the 20th century, the term was imported to modern Mandarin,
rendered as 便當, where it retains its older meaning of “convenient”
and also refers to bento in mainland China and generic boxed lunches in Taiwan.
